Coverage Guidelines for Home Infrared Therapy Systems
Insurance Company Reimbursement Explained
About insurance code E0221.
Healthlight™, Anodyne® Therapy and other portable infrared therapy devices are unfortunately usually NOT covered by most insurance companies. This is based on examples of usual published policies. We have included links to a few as an example.
Although we have linked only to a few of these policies, most (but not all) insurers unfortunately also follow this.
Home Infrared Therapy devices fall under Medicare HCPCS Code E0221. Nearly all the insurance companies follow the Medicare code. You can call and ask your insurance company about coverage under your home medical equipment section (DME) for the E0221 code.
Although your Infrared Therapy treatment may have worked in the clinic or physician's office well beyond your expectations, Medicare and most major insurance companies continue to view the home therapy units as experimental or investigational. They take this position despite many studies by NASA and others that these devices work. The Healthlight™ Infrared system is very reasonably priced at much less than our competition. Since we are not billing your insurance directly, we quote you a one time purchase price, with a 2-year warranty and no surprise bills later on. There is always an exception that some companies may pay for home units. As part of our service we will provide you with a receipt and sample letter of medical necessity for your physician to write. You may submit these to your insurance companies for potential reimbursement. Please exercise caution, as some companies may be saying home units are "covered by insurance" when this actually may not be completely true.
